The Honor of Dragons was published on May 8, 2024, and it is the first novel in the Epic Fantasy of the same name.  Book II, The Valor of Sorcerers, was my second book, followed by The Compassion of Enemies, which was published in November 2024.

The story follows the adventures of Donovan Francis, the 17-year-old son of Battle Mage Edward Francis.  Edward was killed in a battle with a large gold dragon in the hills north of the Franconian village of Farmdale.  After his father’s death, Donovan is filled with a desire for vengeance against the race of dragons, that everyone in Franconia (especially the King) thought were mythical.

To battle and defeat a dragon, Donovan realizes that he needs to enter the Wizards Academy and learn the skills necessary to become a Sorcerer.  Without his father’s help, all fifty of the soldiers of the Royal Expeditionary Force would have been killed by the dragon, since their swords, spears and arrows were unable to pierce the dragon’s scaled hide.

Donovan has rejected all of his father’s previous requests that he enroll in the Wizards Academy, insisting that he does not have the ‘spark’ of magic, which is required for a magician.  While he is still unsure that he has the necessary innate ability, he has decided to present himself to the gate warden, Wizard Stuart, to be tested in hopes of learning enough magic to kill a dragon.

While Liza, the Great Dragon has been slain, her year-old son, Gek, escaped detection by the soldiers of the Royal Expeditionary Force.  The soldiers quickly departed the site of the battle, fearing that there might be other dragons in the vicinity, and now bereft of magical support with their Battle Mage’s death.

Gek emerges from his hiding place to discover his mother’s body.  He is distraught, angry, afraid, and alone.  As Gek considers what to do, Ard, an ancient Great Dragon appears and offers to take Gek under his wing, protecting him while teaching him how to fly, breathe fire, and find prey on his own.

Like Donovan, Gek is consumed with thoughts of revenge for his mother’s murder.  With no other options, Gek accompanies Ard east, towards the coast on Franconia.  Along the way, Ard teaches Gek how to fly and swim, and tells him that his father is a Sea Dragon.  Gek has never met his father (he left Liza and Gek while Gek was still a baby).  Ard does not know who the absent Sea Dragon is, but Gek’s aqua blue underbelly indicated that he is a half-breed, with a Great Dragon mother and a Sea Dragon father.

Once Ard has taught Gek all that he can, Gek will have to travel to the Coral Islands, home of the Sea Dragon Clan, to search for his father.
